Apple Depicts Qualcomm as a Shady Monopolist in $1 Billion Lawsuit

Image
Apple Inc filed a $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,808 crores) lawsuit against supplier Qualcomm Inc on Friday, days after the US government accused the chip maker of resorting to anticompetitive tactics to maintain a monopoly over key semiconductors in mobile phones. Qualcomm is a major supplier to both  Apple  and  Samsung Electronics Co Ltd  for "modem" chips that connect phones to wireless networks. The two companies together accounted for 40 percent of Qualcomm's $23.5 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year. In the lawsuit filed in US District Court for the Southern District of California, Apple accused  Qualcomm  of overcharging for chips and refusing to pay some $1 billion in promised rebates. Apple said in its complaint that Qualcomm withheld the rebates because of Apple's discussions with South Korea's antitrust regulator, the Korea Fair Trade Commission. "If that were not enough, Qualcomm then attempted to extort Appleinto changin...

Apple's Next iPhone Could Be Getting These 2 New Features

Apple’s next iPhone could get some features users had hoped to see this year. The next  Apple  handset, believed to be known as the iPhone 8, could come with both wireless charging and a new display based on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, the  Nikkei  is reporting. Both features were rumored for this year’s iPhone 7 but never came to fruition. Apple’s iPhone 7 requires a cord to be charged, and it has a liquid crystal display (LCD) instead of the newer, more vibrant OLED technology. Speculation is running rampant  over what Apple    AAPL   -1.81%    has planned for the 2017 iPhone. Next year is the 10th anniversary of Apple’s iPhone, which was originally released in 2007. Apple hasn’t delivered a major update to its iPhone since 2014, so many believe the 10-year-anniversary iPhone will be it. Over the last several months, rumors have suggested that  Apple would release an OLED-based iPhone display next yea...

A High-Level Foxconn Executive Just Confirmed Longtime iPhone 8 Rumor

It’s an open secret within the tech community that Apple  withheld major innovative design overhauls  from the iPhone 7 this year because they wanted to save the jaw-dropping changes for next year’s 10th-anniversary iPhone, which will very likely skip the S branding and be called iPhone 8 (personal opinion: I have a feeling Apple might skip the numbering all together and just call it “the new iPhone,” period). The widespread belief is that the 2017 iPhone will be all glass, at least in the front, which would give off the visuals of a bezel-less phone (too bad, Apple,  Xiaomi beat you to it ). Well, over the weekend, a high-level Foxconn executive, who has just been appointed the CEO of Japanese tech company Sharp (which Foxconn owns), sort of confirmed the rumor when he gave away that Apple’s next phone will use an OLED display. Speaking to his alma mater Tatung University in Taipei, Tai Jeng-wu had this to say about Apple (courtesy of Hong Kong tech site  Epri...

iPhone 8 Rumors Swirl: Here’s How To Make Sense Of What’s Known

Image
Though only out for 6 weeks, the iPhone 7′s familiar look has Apple watchers already chasing down every tidbit they can find about next year’s iPhone 8. And while not every rumor can be confirmed, it  is  true that given Apple’s lead times for components most decisions about what will be inside have already been made. Similarly, with production of the new iPhone likely to commence before next summer, there is also much we can know about what’s even possible to include in next year’s model. Given all that, it’s possible to sort the early rumors into three broad categories: things probable enough to call  fact , things plausible enough to call  fantasy , and things so absurd they are nothing but fiction. Facts (or really close to them) Aside from the absolutes — Apple will produce iPhones in at least two sizes, the new iPhone will have its annual CPU upgrade — it’s safe at this point to say that OLED displays are coming to the iPhone. Long a...
